Mirror Mirror on the Wall

There’s no doubt that there are plenty of mirrors to choose from for your home. Mirrors are useful objects to transform almost any space. Sourcing mirrors that have a unique style that’s fitting for the space is ideal. To bring some interest to your room consider hunting for a mirror with an interesting shape or detail. Besides style, getting the correct mirror size does matter. Time and time again people forget to measure for the correct size. Don’t make this mistake!

Always measure first!

Grab your tape measurer, painters tape and tape the mirror dimensions directly on the wall. Quickly you’ll be able to see if you have selected the right sized mirror for the space.

Benefits

My favorite time to use a mirror (or even multiple mirrors paired together) is in a room that has poor lighting. When this issue arises I often like to bring in the “big guns” and place a large, oversized mirror opposite a window or lamps to get light moving around the room. Another favorite mirror benefit is to give the illusion that a room is larger than it really is. When using an oversized mirror you get the feeling that the room is larger than it really is. Mirrors reflect objects (obvious, right?!) so make sure you have some favorite things reflecting back.

Where to Hang and Where not to Hang

The best spots to hang a mirror (besides a powder room/bathroom/bedroom of course) are in rooms with low natural light. These rooms are on the northern side of the home, at night it is the rooms on the eastern side, basements, small spaces, entry ways, and mudrooms.

Having a mirror in your bedroom needs careful consideration especially if you are sensitive to light while sleeping. A bedroom mirror bounces light around the room and for those early mornings or even late summer nights when the sun is up early or late you may not want the light keeping you up. Additionally, it’s not recommended to hang a mirror at the foot of the bed. It is believed that this placement creates energy and can prevent some from getting a good night's sleep.

I love to decorate homes with mirrors. Take a look around your home. Is there a spot that could use a mirror?
